The Hathaway Family Association has been organized to stimulate interest in the collection, compilation, and publication of the history and the genealogy of the Hathaway family. Some of the variations of the spelling of the surname Hathaway include: Hatheway, Hathway, Hadaway, Hataway, and Hattaway. The Oxford Dictionary states: A heath is a tract of land and a heathway is a path across the heath. Such is the possible origin of the family name, Hathaway.
There are also numerous Old English spellings, which may have preceded the more common spellings known today. Although there have been other immigrants, three early Hathaways immigrated from England to America in the 1600's: Nicholas, from whom the largest group descends, Arthur, and the line we call William of Virginia.
